Mr. Lekan Fatodu is a seasoned development expert, public policy specialist, media practitioner and sports enthusiast who currently serves as the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission. His appointment underscores Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s confidence in his ability to revitalise the sports sector in Lagos State via impactful initiatives, international networks, and a passion for sports development, to foster an environment where sports can thrive as a significant contributor to the overall well-being of residents,and economic prosperity of Lagos State.

With over two decades of sterling experience in international development, strategic communications, and diplomacy, Fatodu brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role. His background as a development expert and a passionate sports and fitness buff uniquely positions him to lead the commission into a new era of excellence and innovation.

Prior to his appointment, Fatodu served as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where he implemented a wide array of programmes and projects aimed at addressing various aspects of social development, including poverty alleviation, environmental conservation, and social equality. His leadership has been instrumental in conceptualising, planning, and implementing initiatives that have had a significant impact on the delivery of SDGs in Lagos State.

As the lead consultant at CheckOut Communications, a development, digital solutions, and strategic communications firm, Fatodu played a pivotal role in the success of the Africa Shapers Initiative, an entrepreneurship forum that facilitated the exchange of ideas between established and aspiring entrepreneurs on the continent. Through the Africa Shapers platform, he convened the first-ever African roundtable on business and sustainable development in the British House of Parliament in 2017. This high-level gathering was attended by prominent figures such as Mr. Iain Stewart, the private parliamentary Secretary for International Trade, and Mr. John Howell, the British Prime Minister’s Ambassador on trade to Nigeria at the time.

His extensive global network has facilitated greater support and initiatives from the international development space to Africa, particularly Nigeria, opening opportunities for the country to tap into invaluable skills and resources to confront its development challenges more effectively.

Fatodu’s reputation for his development-oriented accomplishments is not only assured but globally recognised. His exemplary track record in this role has earned him recognition and accolades, including the Most Outstanding Entrepreneur award by Strides Media UK in 2011 and the ‘Outstanding Achievement and Exemplary Public Endeavours’ award by the University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos State Chapter in 2014. He is a graduate of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where he obtained a degree in Mass Communication. He furthered his education at the University of Westminster, London, earning a master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies.

With his cosmopolitan, and connected persona, Fatodu is poised to lead the Lagos State Sports Commission to new heights, fostering collaboration between government agencies, private sector partners, and community stakeholders to advance the sports sector in Lagos State. His dynamic leadership is anticipated to bring exciting developments that will elevate sports in the state to unprecedented levels.
